About Tom

Meet your guide – Tom April

Tom’s guiding career began in California’s Eastern Sierra during the late 1980s. After working for a guide service for a season, Tom and a fellow guide, Mike Peters, broke away to launch their own guide service in the town of Mammoth Lakes. Their enthusiasm and professionalism quickly made The Eastside Guide Service the most sought-after guide service around.

In the early 1990s, Tom expanded his guiding skills to include the new and more difficult waters of the Inter-Mountain area of Northern California by taking a guide position with Clearwater House on Hat Creek. In the late 1990s, Tom met and married his wife, Mary, and for the next few years he continued guiding and living in the Mammoth Lakes area while still making trips to Clearwater House for guide dates.

In 2007, they packed up and moved to the Southern Oregon area where Mary had lived prior to their marriage, and Tom expanded his guiding skills again to include Steelhead fishing on the Rogue and Applegate Rivers. Tom will be working with “Clearwater Lodge” Guiding and instructing for trout around the Intermountain area of Northern California in the spring, summer and fall and guiding for Steelhead in the fall and winter months around Southern Oregon.

In addition to his years of experience guiding, Tom has been teaching beginner to advanced classes around the Intermountain area for over twenty years, and is involved with the “Guide School” for Clearwater Lodge, instructing fly fishers wishing to make guiding fly-fishing tours a career. Tom is also a Federation of Fly Fishing Certified Casting Instructor. His 20-plus years of experience, organizational skills, professionalism and great attitude make Tom a much requested guide in both Northern California and Southern Oregon.
